The Project

Giving An Older Front Entrance A Complete New Look

Hi, I'm Tim from TS Glazing. This recent project took me to Gillingham in Medway, where the customer wanted to replace an older glazed entrance that had started to look tired and was no longer performing as well as they wanted.

The existing frames and entrance door had been in place for a number of years, and the customer felt it was the right time to improve the appearance, security and thermal performance of this part of their home.

After inspecting the existing entrance and talking through the available options, we agreed on new white uPVC glazing together with a modern composite front door.

As an experienced double glazing installer , one thing I always pay close attention to is not simply how the finished installation looks, but how the frames and door are supported, insulated, sealed and adjusted behind the scenes.

“With older installations you never know exactly what you'll find until the original frames come out. That's why I never rush this stage. Getting the opening right first is what gives the new installation its long-term performance.”

How We Completed The Work

Our Front Porch Replacement Process

A good installation starts long before the finishing sealant goes on. Here is how I approached this particular front porch replacement in Gillingham.

1

Removing The Existing Entrance

I carefully removed the existing glazing and entrance door, taking particular care around the surrounding brickwork and structure so that we could create a clean opening for the replacement installation.

2

Preparing & Checking The Opening

Once the old installation was removed, I checked the opening for alignment, loose material and any areas that could affect the positioning, insulation or sealing of the new frames and composite door.

3

Installing & Finishing

The new glazing and composite front door were carefully positioned, fixed, insulated, adjusted and professionally sealed to create a secure, weather-resistant and neat finished installation.

What Can Be Found Once An Old Entrance Is Removed?

One of the reasons I like showing customers photographs from the installation stage is that some of the most important work is completely hidden once the job has been finished.

With older windows and doors, there is always the possibility of discovering uneven openings, deteriorated fixings, gaps around the original frames or areas where old insulation and sealant are no longer providing adequate protection.

Simply fitting a new composite door and glazing into an imperfect opening can create problems later. Poor alignment may affect how the door closes and locks, while insufficient insulation around the frame can contribute to draughts, cold spots and unnecessary heat loss.

  • Opening checked before the replacement frames were secured
  • Frames and composite door carefully levelled and aligned
  • Gaps correctly insulated around the installation
  • Composite door adjusted for smooth opening and closing
  • Locking mechanism fully checked
  • Internal and external perimeter professionally sealed

This attention to installation detail is particularly important because even high-quality glazing or a premium composite door will not perform at its best if the surrounding installation has not been completed correctly.

Why A Composite Front Door Was The Right Choice

For this Gillingham property, a new composite front door was the ideal choice because the homeowner wanted to improve more than just the appearance of the entrance.

Composite doors are designed to combine strength, security and thermal efficiency with a huge choice of styles, colours, glazing options and hardware.

When carrying out a composite door installation in Gillingham, I pay particular attention to frame alignment, hinges, locking points and perimeter sealing. A properly fitted door should close smoothly, engage correctly with the locking system and provide a good seal around the complete frame.
