The Project

Creating A Brand-New Window Opening In A Hempstead Log Cabin

Hi, I'm Tim from TS Glazing. This was a slightly different window installation project for a customer in Hempstead, Medway.

Rather than replacing an old or damaged window, the customer wanted to add a completely new window to an existing log cabin. The wall was completely enclosed, which meant there wasn't an existing frame or opening for me to work with.

The job therefore involved much more than simply fitting a window. I first needed to establish exactly where the new opening should sit, measure and mark the timber accurately, carefully cut through the existing wall and then construct a suitable timber opening.

It's a good example of the type of bespoke work we can undertake alongside our more traditional double glazing installations and window repairs across Medway.

“This wasn't a case of taking an old window out and putting another one in. We were starting with a completely solid timber wall, so everything had to be measured, cut and prepared from scratch. Getting the opening right was the most important part of the job.”

Before We Started

The Log Cabin Before The New Window Opening

These photographs show the cabin before any cutting took place. Both the internal timber lining and external cladding were completely intact, with no existing window opening.

Creating The Opening

Measuring And Cutting The New Window Opening

Before making any cuts, the position and dimensions of the new window opening had to be carefully established.

With a job like this, accuracy at the beginning makes a huge difference later. If the opening isn't square or the dimensions aren't right, it can create unnecessary problems when it comes to fitting, levelling and sealing the window.

I therefore measured and marked the opening carefully from the inside before checking the position in relation to the exterior of the cabin.

1

Measure & Position

The first job was deciding exactly where the window should sit and accurately marking the dimensions of the new opening.

2

Cut The Timber Wall

Once everything had been checked, the timber wall could be carefully cut to create the opening without causing unnecessary damage to the surrounding cabin.

3

Prepare The Opening

After cutting, the opening was checked and prepared so that a strong, square timber surround could be constructed.

Opening Created

Once the timber had been removed, we had the basic aperture for the new window.

At this stage the photographs make it easy to see why creating the opening is only part of the job. The aperture still needed to be checked, strengthened and properly finished.

Timber Preparation

Building And Finishing The New Log Cabin Window Opening

With the main opening created, the next stage was preparing and finishing the structure so that the new aperture was strong, square and properly supported.

New timber was fitted around the opening to create a neat and stable surround. This stage is particularly important because the finished window is only going to perform properly if the structure around it has been prepared correctly.

  • Opening checked for level and alignment
  • New timber surround constructed
  • Window aperture properly supported
  • Internal and external dimensions checked
  • Edges finished neatly around the new opening
The Finished Result

Finished Log Cabin Window Installation In Hempstead

Once the new opening had been cut and the timber surround had been carefully constructed, the final stage was making sure everything looked neat and properly finished from both inside and outside the cabin.

This is the point where all of the earlier measuring and preparation really pays off. The opening now sits cleanly within the timber wall, with a properly defined surround ready to support the new window.

From the outside, the new opening fits naturally into the existing cabin structure. Internally, the timber finish also ties in neatly with the cabin walls, giving the whole installation a much more professional and purpose-built appearance.

“This was a really satisfying job because we started with a completely solid wall and ended up with a properly prepared new window opening that looks like it was always meant to be part of the cabin.”

Installation Considerations

Installing A Window Into A Timber Building Is Different

One of the important things to remember with a log cabin window installation is that you're not working with the same structure as a conventional brick-built property.

Timber can naturally expand, contract and move with changes in temperature and moisture. That's why I don't approach a garden building or log cabin in exactly the same way as a standard masonry window opening.

The position, dimensions and support around the new aperture all need to be considered carefully. Simply cutting a hole in the timber and trying to fit a window into it without properly preparing the surrounding structure could lead to problems later.

“The part customers eventually see is the window, but some of the most important work happens before the window even goes near the opening. If the preparation isn't right, you're starting the installation with a problem.”

Why Add A Window?

Adding A New Window To A Log Cabin Or Garden Room

Garden rooms and log cabins are increasingly used as home offices, workshops, gyms and additional living spaces. Adding a window can make a big difference to how the room feels and how enjoyable it is to use.

☀️

More Natural Light

A new window can transform a darker cabin by introducing natural daylight into the room.

🌿

Garden Views

Positioning a window correctly can open up the room and create a much stronger connection with the garden.

💨

Ventilation

An opening window can provide useful ventilation, particularly where the cabin is used regularly.

🏡

Better Usable Space

Improving natural light and ventilation can make a garden building feel much more like a usable room.

Common Questions

Log Cabin & Garden Room Window FAQs

Can you add a window where there isn't currently an opening?

In suitable structures, it may be possible to create a completely new opening rather than simply replacing an existing window. The building and proposed position need to be assessed first to determine what is appropriate.

Can you install windows in log cabins and garden rooms?

Yes, depending on the construction of the building. Timber garden buildings require a different approach from conventional brick properties, so the existing structure and window opening need to be considered carefully.

Why does the timber opening need to be prepared before fitting the window?

The window needs a suitable, stable and correctly aligned opening. Preparing the timber structure first helps provide the right support for accurate fitting, insulation and sealing.

Can a new window improve a garden office?

A well-positioned window can provide additional daylight, garden views and, where an opening window is used, extra ventilation. This can make a garden office or cabin feel much more comfortable.

Do you carry out window installations in Hempstead?

Yes. TS Glazing is based in Hempstead and provides window installation and repair services throughout Hempstead, Gillingham, Rainham, Chatham, Rochester, Strood and the wider Medway area.
