What are Bi-Fold Doors?

These doors work on a concertina principle. The structure itself consists of multiple hinged, glazed panels (or ‘leaves’) attached to one another. For typical domestic installations, the number of leaves ranges between 2 and 7. When fully opened, these panels fold neatly in on each other as they slide back. This creates a compact, unobtrusive stack of leaves to one side of the now wide-open entranceway.

Connected on a train, the framed glass panels run along a built-in track. As you open your doors, then, the leaves fold together and slide smoothly to one side, supported by a chain of wheels or tracking system. These solutions keep the leaves fixed in place while allowing for easy, smooth and quiet motion. With inward and outward opening options, we can find the perfect solution to suit your property.

This adaptability extends to threshold options too. In this regard, you have 2 choices: ‘weathered’ or ‘non-weathered’. A weathered threshold features a small, solid lip on one side of the track. Conversely, a non-weathered threshold sits flush with the floor.

Generally speaking, non-weathered thresholds suit installations in Medway and Kent that have shelter against the elements. They also eliminate trip hazards and mobility concerns.

However, the raised lip of a weathered threshold makes it an effective solution for most of the exterior bi-fold doors we install in Canterbury, Chatham, Gillingham, Maidstone, Rochester, Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells and the neighbouring areas. This is because they offer protection against the wind and water ingress.

It’s important to note that, when closed, your installation has a single ‘traffic door’ for easy access.

TS Glazing Maintenance & Repairs supplies bi-folding with aluminium frames. Thanks to a specially designed construction, including thermal breaks, these frames have enhanced thermal performance, the perfect complement to the double or triple glazing sitting within them.

Why Upgrade to Bi-Folding Doors?

Whether you’re replacing traditional sliding or French doors, or you’re building an extension, a set of bi-fold doors elevates your home’s aesthetic, functionality and value.

First, the mostly glass structure significantly increases the amount of natural light flowing into your property. What’s more, you benefit from having a panoramic view of your garden. This is ideal for relaxation or if you want to keep an eye on the kids as they play outside.

In fact, the relationship with the garden is key to the appeal of bi-folding doors. Because they create a wide access point, these doors blur the boundary between inside and outside living. From al fresco family dinners to entertaining friends at the weekend, your new installation will help to improve your quality of life.

Further benefits include:

  • Opened doors take up little space

  • Multi-point locking systems

  • Internally beaded frames

  • High-security hinges

  • Innovative glazing solutions

  • Easy to clean and low maintenance
